Abjat-sur-Bandiat

Abjat -sur- Bandiat, Occitan Ajac de Bandiat, is a commune with 650 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district Nontron and Canton Nontron. It also forms part of the Périgord -Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Etymology

The origins of the name Abjat go very likely from the Latin male name suffix- acum with Apicius back.

On the Cassini map, which was published in 1756 and 1789, the place appeared as Abjac. In 1864 he was renamed " Abjat -de- Nontron ". The current name was established in 1975. Their extension name is derived from the river Bandiat.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Bandiat, a tributary of the Tardoire, about 60 kilometers south-west of Limoges on the border of the Haute- Vienne. It is 10 kilometers (air distance) from the located in the southwest Nontron until Piégut -Pluviers in the northwest there are 7 kilometers.

The topographically lowest point of the municipality is located 196 meters above sea level at Le Bouchage on Bandiat in the southwest. The highest point 355 meters above sea level is located near La Chapelle Verlaine in the southeast.

Geology

Abjat -sur- Bandiat lies entirely on the Variscan basement of the north-western Massif Central. The biggest part of its territory is occupied by Piégut -Pluviers granodiorite. In the extreme south-east even of Saint- Mathieu- leucogranite is pending. The leucogranite contains at Chachat and La Chapelle- Verlaine larger enclaves of mica schists ( mica schist unit Parautochthone ). In the south, at Belle Vue and Savanat plagioclase leading paragneiss are encountered. In the quarry of Abjat -sur- Bandiat along the right side of the valley of the Bandiats Rotfazies of Piégut -Pluviers - granodiorite is mined and processed mainly to gravel and granules; the gravel ( gravel) is a popular raw material for the paths and roads because of its strong coloring.

Attractions

The oldest structure in Abjat -sur- Bandiat is the Romanesque church of Saint -André, which was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Transport links

The center of Abjat -sur- Bandiat crosses the D 87 (or D 64 in the Haute Vienne) of Marval after Nontron in a southwesterly direction. It also crosses the northwest -southeast running D 96 of Piégut -Pluviers to Saint -Saud- Lacoussière. The municipal area touched on the northern edge of the D 93 (or D 75 ) of Piégut -Pluviers by Marval. The southeast edge touches the D 85 of Nontron towards Châlus.

Long-distance footpaths

By Abjat -sur- Bandiat the GR 4 runs in an east-west direction. From it branches off at Château de l' Etang, the GR 436 to the south (connection to GR 36).
