Aboriginal Shire of Kowanyama

Geography

The Shire is located on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in the north of the state on the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 500 kilometers west of Cairns and 1830 km north of the capital, Brisbane.

Almost all the inhabitants live in the settlement Kowanyama in the south of the LGA at Magnificent Creek.

History

Kowanyama is called in the language of the aborigines " many waters" and refers to the north by river delta of the Mitchell River. On Topsy Creek was 1905, the first mission in 1919 moved to the north. 1964 cyclone destroyed a mission, it was rebuilt and placed under official management. 1987 Native overridden ² piece of land, a 250 km, over which they took control. In 2004, the Kowanyama Shire was established, in addition to the settlement covers the entire river delta, and so the Aboriginal granted local self-government.

Management

The Kowanyama Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
