Aboriginal Shire of Pormpuraaw

Geography

The Shire is located on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in the north of the state on the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 500 km north- west of Cairns and 1810 km north- west of the capital Brisbane. The area includes a long stretch of coast between the mouths of Holroyd and Coleman River.

History

1938, the Edward River Mission was established for the Aborigines in the area. In 1967, she was placed under official management and two years later renamed the Pormpuraaw. 2004 was the settlement of the status of Aboriginal Shire and since then has been under limited local self-government of indigenous people living there.

Management

The Pormpuraaw Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
