Adam Makowicz

Adam Makowicz ( born August 18, 1940 in Hnojník, Landkreis Teschen, Silesia as Adam Matyszkowicz ) is a Polish jazz pianist who now lives in Toronto. He is mainly known for his solo concerts.

Life

Makowicz was born a Polish -born parents son in today's Czech Republic, grew up in Poland and studied at the Chopin Conservatory in Krakow classical piano. He played among other things Ben Webster and Jan Garbarek. 1971 to 1974 he played in the band of Michał Urbaniak. In 1973 he released his album Adam Makowics Unit at Muza in Poland. He was chosen by the readers of "Jazz Forum " in Poland at the best jazz pianists. In 1974 he was a member of "Piano Conclave ", he toured with Stańko and Czesław Bartkowski. Then he was "discovered " by John Hammond, who sent him in 1977 to a 10-week successful tour of the USA and built him internationally as a solo pianist. 1977 also appeared his solo album Adam at Columbia and he is playing with Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson on the " Erroll Garner Tribute Concert". In 1978 he moved to New York City. In 1986, he was in a duo with bassist Ray Drummond on tour in Europe. When he was banned in the 1980s in Poland, he participated in the U.S. in the initiative "Let Poland be Poland". Since 1989, he also plays regularly every year in Poland. In the 2000s he moved to Toronto.

He maintains an eclectic style of play. His masterful technique has been compared with that of Art Tatum and Erroll Garner.

He also repeatedly bonds in classical music, in particular Frederic Chopin, for example, on Reflections on Chopin (AM Records 2000) or From My Field (2006, alongside jazz standards ), as well as on a concert to celebrate Chopin's 150th anniversary of his death the French Embassy in Washington DC In 1999. Makowicz composed and also takes his own plays.
