Marc Johnson (musician)

Marc Johnson ( born October 21, 1953 in Omaha, Nebraska ) is an American jazz bassist who played in the final trio of pianist Bill Evans.

Johnson started 16 years playing bass ( before that he was already playing piano and cello ) and studied at the University of North Texas ( Lyle Mays was a fellow student ). In 1972 he played in the Fort Worth Symphony double bass. In 1977 he toured with the Woody Herman 's big band. At a tour stop in New York in 1978 invited him to Bill Evans Trio in his last one, which was then played at the Village Vanguard, in which he played until the death of the pianist 1980. In 1982 he worked on Stan Getz ' Concord album Pure Getz. In 1985 he started under his own name for ECM include (Bass Desires, with guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield and drummer Peter Erskine, with the same group Bass Desires Second Sight also 1987). With Arto Tuncboyaciyan Ben Monder and he undertook to Right Brain Patrol 1991 attempt to orchestrate original and transfer the bass drum feature on the double bass. Next, he worked closely with guitarist John Abercrombie ( in whose trio he was long ), Lyle Mays, Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and Brazilian singer and pianist Eliane Elias together (eg in the Trio), his wife. On his last recording for ECM Shades of Jade, which also includes pieces by Elias, he plays with Joe Lovano. Other prominent musicians with whom he has performed are Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, Paul Motian, Lee Konitz, Charles Lloyd, Gary Burton, Jack DeJohnette and Dino Saluzzi.
