Adana Vilayet

The Vilayet Adana ( վիլայեթ Ադանայի Armenian, Ottoman vilayet -i Adana, Turkish Adana Vilayeti ) was a vilayet ( province) of the Ottoman Empire in the region of Cilicia.

Management

The Vilayet Adana bordered to the west by the Vilayet of Konya, on the north by Ankara and Sivas vilayets and South, and East to the Vilayet of Aleppo.

The sanjak of the vilayet of Adana were:

  • Sanjak Mersin
  • Sanjak Adana
  • Sanjak Kozan
  • Sanjak Osmaniye

Population

Until the genocide of the Armenians and the Greeks held simultaneously persecutions in 1915 the Vilayet Adana had 403 400 inhabitants. Almost half of the total population were Armenians ( total of 178,000 ), but these were only 52 650 Christian Armenians, as the majority of them had converted to Sunni Islam. More 8,974 inhabitants were Greeks. Besides lived in the region Circassians, Arabs, Turkomans, Kurds, Turkmen and Yörük so-called "Gypsy " (tr. " Cingen ").

Due to the bad weather conditions in Cilicia the Vilayet of Adana was relatively sparsely populated. The most populous cities were Adana and Mersin.
