Adolf von Liebenberg

Adolf Ritter von Liebenberg de Zsittin ( born September 5, 1851 in Como, Lombardy, † May 6, 1922 in Vienna ) was an Austrian crop scientists. He has taught since 1878 at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna.

Life and work

Adolf Liebenberg, son of an officer studied, since 1868, chemistry and agriculture at the Technical University in Vienna, began in 1871 at the University of Halle ( Saale) his agricultural studies continued and received his PhD in 1873 with Julius Kühn with a dissertation on the behavior of water in soil. He then worked as a civil servant in a sugar factory. In 1875 he returned to the University of Halle and habilitated in the same year with the Scriptures " Studies on the soil heat ".

1876 ​​followed Liebenberg a chair at the University of Königsberg. Here he worked as an associate professor of agriculture and continued to struggle with issues of soil physics. As the successor of Friedrich Haberlandt Liebenberg was appointed in 1878 as an associate professor of agricultural crop production to the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna and 1884 was appointed full professor. As head of the chair of agricultural plant production, he worked here for 44 years as a successful teacher, researcher and organizer.

In Vienna Liebenberg research focus was initially in the field of seed being. In 1881 he founded a seed control station. Several papers he published on open issues to Keimungsphysiologie. In 1898 he succeeded to the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna to establish a chair of Phytopathology and 1906 Chair of Plant Breeding. The merits Liebenberg 1898 were honored with the award of the title privy councilor (1898 ) and the contour Cross of the Franz -Joseph- Order ( 1900).
