Adrian Năstase

Adrian Năstase ( born June 22, 1950 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian politician (Social Democratic Party of Romania, PSD ).

Life

Youth

Năstase comes from a family of civil servants, he is married for the second time and has two sons. From 1973 to 1977 he studied law in Bucharest.

Policy

His political career began immediately after graduation in the Protocol Department of the Foreign Ministry. In 1987 he was appointed professor at the University of Bucharest and a scientist at the Institute of Law. In December 1989, he was ambassador to China. He represented the communist Nicolae Ceauşescu's ideology and human rights organizations in Strasbourg and Oslo, and was an opponent of " perestroika ". After the revolution in Romania in 1989, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1990 and 1992. On December 28, 2000, he became Prime Minister of Romania.

Resignation and trial

In the presidential elections in December 2004, he was defeated in the runoff surprising by his right-liberal opposition candidate Traian Basescu. He subsequently went on December 21 from his position as Prime Minister and took over then the post of President of Parliament. He resigned in March 2006 by this office back.

After many years of investigation Nastase was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 2 years for illegal party funding in January 2012. This judgment became final in June 2012.

On March 30, 2012, a court sentenced him in Bucharest in the first instance to three years probation. The court considered it proven that Năstase had blackmailed a former Romanian consul in Hong Kong. He described himself as innocent and suspected political motives.

After became legally binding sentencing in January 2012, he is said to have faked 20 June 2012 with the help of police and medics tried to commit suicide in order to escape the admission to prison.
