Æthelbert II of Kent

Aethelberht II (also Æthelbert, Æthelberct, Aethelberht, Æðelbriht, Æðelbyrht; † 762 ) was from 725 to his death ( Upper) King of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent. He came from the dynasty of Oiscingas.

Life

He was a son of the king Wihtred ( 690/691-725 ). His mother was either Cynegyth, Æthelburg or Wærburg, one of the three wives Wihtreds. On April 23, 725 Wihtred died. Heirs of the kingdom were his three sons Aethelberht II, Eadberht I. and Ealric. Aethelberht was the eldest of the brothers to the East Kent and the supremacy Eadberht reigned in West Kent, while Ealric, who disappeared on it from source, probably subordinate co-regent was. Probably Ealric died soon after. In contrast to this now widely accepted representation, called the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as the sole heir to the throne Eadberht, succeeded the Aethelberht in the year 748.

731 Before Kent came under the suzerainty Mercia, whose king Aethelbald came to dominate the whole of southern England. In the year 748 died Æthelberhts brother Eadberht I and his son Eardwulf ( 748 - before 762 ) was King in the West Kents. Aethelberht transferred lands to the St. Andrew 's Church in Rochester. In addition to other charters also a letter Æthelberhts to Boniface, the " Apostle of the Germans " get stopped. With Eardwulfs Death before 762 the rule of the Kentish dynasty of Oiscingas ended in the West Kents. His successor was Sigered, which presumably originated from the royal dynasty of Essex. Aethelberht himself died in 762 and was in the Abbey Church, " Peter and Paul " buried in Canterbury. Successor as king was Eadberht II, who was probably a relative of his.
