Æthelred of Wessex

Æthelred I ( also Æþelræd I, Ethelred I., Ethered, Aetheredus, Asher, Ethel Expectant; * around 837, † April 23 871 at Merton ) was 865-871 king of Wessex and Kent.

Family

He was the fourth son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and his first wife Osburga.

With his wife Wulfthryth he had two sons:

  • Æthelwald and
  • Æthelhelm

And the daughter

  • Thyra

The Anglo-Saxon historian Æthelweard was his great-grandson.

Rule

Æthelred signed deeds of his father since 854 as a king's son, a title he retained even under the government of his brothers Aethelbald and Aethelberht.
