Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Interna

The Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Interna - AISI since 2007, the domestic intelligence agency of Italy. By a law on the reform of the Italian intelligence services of 3 August 2007, the new agency took over almost all of its predecessor tasks SISDE.

Tasks and organization

The AISI is subject to how the foreign service Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Esterna Italian Prime Minister or a Minister authorized by him without portfolio or Secretary of State. To coordinate the intelligence services is the Office of the Prime Minister, the department Dipartimento delle Informazioni per la Sicurezza (DIS ).

In contrast to his predecessor SISDE service and military service SISMI, which were not organized according to the territorial - but on the principle that AISI is responsible solely for the domestic market. From a military SISMI has assumed the counterintelligence domestically. Will they in turn are working abroad, for example in the investigation of organized crime, it can only do so in cooperation with the Foreign Service AISE and under the control of the DIS.

The AISI reports to the Prime Minister, but also reports to the Interior Ministry. This is subject to combat organized crime and the Direzione Investigativa anti-mafia which, however, is not a news service, but a police organization. The same applies to the police state security DIGOS. While the Home Office is directly supplied with relevant information, all other authorities must first submit their requests to the DIS.
