Agostino Cacciavillan

Agostino Cardinal Cacciavillan ( born August 14, 1926 in Novale di Valdagno, Vicenza, Italy) is a retired cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Agostino Cacciavillan studied at various universities of Rome and earned a Licentiate in Social Sciences and a PhD in the fields of law and canon law. In 1949 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders and worked in the Roman parish ministry. From 1957 to 1960 he attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

After a few months in the Vatican Secretariat of State, he was secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in the Philippines. On June 21, 1963 he was awarded by Pope Paul VI. the honorary title Surplus secret chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ). From 1964 to 1968 Cacciavillan Nunciature secretary in Spain and briefly also in Portugal. From 1969 to 1974 he worked again in the Vatican Secretariat of State. On August 26, 1973 Paul VI gave him. the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness.

On January 17, 1976 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Amiternum and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Kenya and Apostolic Delegate for the Seychelles. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Secretary of State Jean -Marie Villot on 21 February of the same year. Further stations of his diplomatic career were 1981-1990 India and Nepal. From 1990, he headed the Apostolic Nunciature in the U.S. and took on the task of permanent observer to the Organization of American States. He also represented the Holy See at the World Association of Jurists.

On 5 November 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed president of the administration of goods of the Apostolic See, and took him on 21 February 2001 as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santi Angeli Custodi a Città Giardino in the College of Cardinals to. From his duties in the Roman Curia, he resigned in October 2002 on grounds of age.

From 1 March 2008 to 21 February 2011, he held the office of cardinal proto- deacon. On 21 February 2011, he was charged while maintaining his pro hac vice declared for titular church diaconal titles cardinal priest.
