Agustín Abarca

Agustin Abarca (* December 27, 1882 in Talca, † May 28, 1953 in Santiago de Chile) was a Chilean painter.

Abarca attended the Liceo de Hombres and the Instituto Comercial in Talca, before he came to painting through his first teacher Pablo Burchard. In Santiago, he was from 1904 to 1907 students by Pedro Lira and Alberto Valenzuela Llanos at the Art Academy of Universidad Católica. From 1909 to 1912 he studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes in Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor.

From 1916 Abarca inspector of the Escuela Normal was in Victoria. After his return to Santiago, he devoted himself mainly to painting. In 1940 he received in public competition the chair of painting and drawing at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Viña del Mar, where he taught for a year.

Abarca is counted to the group of painters of the Generación del Trece to his teacher Sotomayor. Friendly relations connected him with regular usage, Jorge Letelier, Pedro Luna and Pablo Burchard, also were among his circle, the poet Gabriela Mistral, Omar Caceres and Jorge González Bastías and the composer Remigio Acevedo. For his painting, he has received numerous awards, several of his works are in the possession of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, the Pinakothek der Universidad de Conceción and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo the Universidad de Chile.
