Ailia

Ailia Coila

Ailia Coila is a species from the order of catfish -like ( Siluriformes ). The species is the only valid species of the genus Ailia and occurs in rivers of the Indian subcontinent.

Features

Ailia Coila are elongated, laterally strongly flattened fish with no dorsal fin but with a small adipose fin. They reach a length of about 10 to 30 centimeters. The upper jaw projects beyond the lower jaw. There are eight barbels present, which are all long, and of which the four on the lower jaw are all in a line. The pectoral fins have a hard jet. The caudal fin is forked.

System

Ailia Coila is traditionally attributed to the glass catfish ( Schilbeidae ). However, molecular biological studies indicate that it is in contrast to the rest of the glass catfish of the group " Big Asia" attributed together with the genus Laides.
