Akilles Järvinen

Akilles " Aki " Eero Johannes Järvinen ( born September 19, 1905 in Jyväskylä, † March 7, 1943 in Tampere ) was a Finnish athlete who successfully in the late 1920s and in the first half of the 1930s in the decathlon and 400m hurdles had. He won three silver medals.

He was the son of discus - Olympic gold medalist Verner Järvinen and the older brother of javelin gold medalist Matti Järvinen. Akilles and Matti Järvinen are the only brothers in the history of athletics, the (1930 - 1932) at the same time held a world record in the decathlon Akilles, Matti in the javelin. Akilles would become like his brother Olympic champion - if the rating launched in 1950 would have been considered as early as 1928. After this rating Akilles Järvinen would have had 1928 150 points 1932 120 points ahead Paavo Yrjölä or before Jim Bausch.

Akilles Järvinen was only 37 years old. He came in the crash of a PY- 37 lost their lives that was with him as co-pilot on a training flight.

  • VIII Summer Olympic Games in Paris in 1928: SILVER with 7932 points behind compatriot Paavo Yrjölä with 8053 points and before the Americans Ken Doherty with 7707 pts
  • World record with 8255 points in Viipuri on 20 July 1930 ( improvement of the two -year-old record of Paavo Yrjölä by 202 points, a record held 2 years); a few days later threw brother Matti Järvinen the first of his 10 javelin world records
  • IX. Olympic Summer Games 1932 in Los Angeles: SILVER with 8292 pts ( Score 1950: 6707 pts) behind the Americans Jim Bausch with 8462 pts ( Score 1950: 6588 pts) and before the German Wolrad Eberle with 8031 pts
  • European Championships 1934 in Turin: SILVER 400m hurdles in 53.7 s behind the German Hans Scheele in 53.2 s and before the Greek Christos Mantikos in 54.9 s

His message for the X. 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, he had to retire because of food poisoning.
