Al Alvarez

Al Alvarez (* August 5, 1929 in London ) is an English poet, writer and literary critic who publishes under the name A. Alvarez.

Born as Alfred Alvarez, he was educated at Oundle School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he completed his degree in English with honors. After a brief teaching career at Oxford and the U.S., he focused late twenties to work as a writer. From 1956 to 1966 he was a literary critic and editor for Poetry in the British newspaper The Observer. In this role, he led the works of John Berryman, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Zbigniew Herbert, and Miroslav Holub in the British public.

Alvarez is the author of many nonfiction. Best known his study of suicide The Savage God is ( German: The cruel god), the additional resonance learned through his friendship with Sylvia Plath. He wrote also about divorce ( Life After Marriage ), Dreams ( Night, German: the night) and the oil industry ( offshore ) as his hobbies Poker ( The Biggest Game In Town ) and mountaineering ( Feeding the Rat, German: Wall Addict ). His autobiography published in 1999 is entitled: Where Did It All Go Right?

The Alvarez 1962 published poem anthology The New Poetry was hailed in the British public as a fresh start. She set the American poetry of the Alvarez perceived in the British Poetry " gentility " of that time.

In 2003 appeared feature film Sylvia Alvarez was portrayed by Jared Harris. The focus of the film is the moving relationship between Sylvia Plath and her husband Ted Hughes.
