Alan Tsagaev

Alan Zagaew ( Bulgarian Алан Цагаев, Russian Алан Цагаев / Alan Zagajew; * September 13, 1977 in Ordzhonikidze, Russia ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter and world record holder in collision with 237 kg in class to 105 kg.

Sporting career

The Russian-born Alan Zagaew emigrated in 1998 to Bulgaria. He first appeared on the 2004 European Championship on the international scene, where he scored 392.5 kg in class to 94 kg.

Already five months later Zagaew stepped up in class to 105 kg at the Olympics in Sydney, and increased his duel income by 30 kg to 422.5 kg, with which he won the silver medal. Previously, it was unclear whether Zagaew likely to start at all due to the Bulgarian doping scandal. After three Bulgarian medal winners tested positive for diuretics, the IMF locked out the entire team. The Bulgarian Association complained to the sports court against the judgment and won, so Zagaew could start yet.

At the World Championships 2001, however, his result of 405 kg was only enough for eighth place. A year later improved Zagaew his performance again and became vice world champion in single combat, as well as world champion in bumping.

In Vancouver in 2004 prevented three invalid attempts in the snatch a duel placement and Zagaew was able to win the gold medal only in bumping.

2004 just before the Olympic Games in Athens Zagaew tested positive and banned for two years.

When his ban expired in 2006, he picked up at the world championships 385.0 kg in single combat and earned 10th place, but already for the World Cup 2007 in Chiang Mai, he rose again to 411.0 kg and was the second time Vice World Champion.

2008 Zagaew was tested again positive in the run-up to the Olympic Games with ten other Bulgarian lifters and received as a repeat offender, a lifetime ban.
