The Alatyr (Russian Алатырь, ersjan. Ратор лей, Chuvash Улатăр ) is a left tributary of the Sura in the European part of Russia.

It rises about 10 km west of Pervomaisk in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in the Volga northern heights. The 296 km long river has a catchment area of 11,200 km ² first flows in an easterly direction through the southern part of Nizhny Novgorod, where he receives numerous small tributaries.

Between Ilyinskoye and Kemlja it flows into the territory of the Republic of Mordovia. The river flows through gently meandering the northeastern part of Mordovia in an easterly direction and passes between Ardatow and the city Alatyr the border to the Chuvash Republic.

The Alatyr flows a few kilometers northeast of the town of the same name in the Sura. From April to November the river is ice-free.
