Alatyr, Chuvash Republic

Alatyr (Russian Алатырь, Chuvash Улатӑр / Ulatăr, Mordvin Ратор Ош / Rator Osh ) is a town in the Chuvash Republic in the Volga Federal District of Russia. It is the administrative seat of Rajons Alatyr and has 38 203 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Alatyr is located about 800 km southeast of Moscow and about 195 kilometers south-west of the Republic capital Cheboksary on the left bank of the Sura at the mouth of the river Alatyr.

History

Tsar Ivan the Terrible in 1552 was to build a fortified settlement to protect the borders of the Moscow kingdom at the mouth of the river Alatyr. Since 1780 Alatyr is a district town.

In the city the POW camp consisted of 463 German prisoners of war of World War II.

Economy and Transport

Alatyr has a locomotive repair shop. Other important industries include Machorka and shoe manufacturing and electrical equipment manufacture. The town lies on the railway line Pensa - Kazan and has a river port at the Sura and an airfield.

Attractions

The city is a center of Russian Orthodoxy in Chuvashia; of which bear witness to many historic religious buildings, among many others, the John Church ( церковь Иоанно - Предтеченская, 1703), the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God ( собор Богородице - Рождественский, 1747 ) and the Trinity Monastery ( Троицкий монастырь, founded in 1584, decimated ) and the Nicholas Monastery ( Николаевский монастырь, founded in 1634). In addition, many streets with buildings from the 19th to the early 20th century have been preserved in the city center.
