Kanash

Kanash ( Chuvash and Russian Канаш ) is a Russian city in the Autonomous Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District with 45 607 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It forms a separate urban district and is also the administrative seat of the homonymous Rajons Kanash.

The city is situated on the northern slopes of the Volga Heights, approximately 800 km east of Moscow and 70 km south of the capital of Republic of Cheboksary. The nearest town is Ziwilsk, 38 km north of Kanash away.

History

Kanash was created in 1891 as a settlement called station Schichrany ( Шихраны ), which was applied to the 1893 went into operation in railway Moscow -Kazan Saransk. The original name of the place came from a neighboring village. In the 1910s Schichrany was via the train station already a busy commercial center with a variety of warehouses.
