Shumerlya

Schumerlja (Russian Шумерля, Chuvash Çĕмĕрле / Çĕmĕrle ) is a Russian city in the Autonomous Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District with 31 722 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It forms a separate urban district and is also the administrative seat of the Rajons Schumerlja.

Geography

Schumerlja is located about 600 km east of Moscow and 110 km southwest of the capital of Republic of Cheboksary on the northern slopes of the Volga heights on the right bank of the Sura. The nearest town Jadrin 51 km downstream north of Schumerlja.

History

The village was founded in 1916 as a settlement in 1918 opened a railway station on the route Moscow -Kazan. The Chuvash name Çĕmĕrle was taken over by a neighboring village, meaning " roar, roar ".

In the 1920s continued the industrial development of the town with the construction of a timber combine, among other things, that supplied during the Second World War spare parts for armaments production. In 1937 Schumerlja, by this time, with around 15,000 inhabitants, a city.

In the postwar period, the industrial and infrastructure Schumerljas developed further. The highest population of around 43,000 was reached at the beginning of the 1990s, since then it has fallen back to about 10,000 inhabitants. The predominant industries are chemicals, commercial vehicle and food production and wood processing. Schumerlja has a Anliegestelle at the Sura, as well as a station on the main railway line Moscow -Kazan.
