It was the successor of C III, which had been developed from the CI. While the CI and C III hardly discriminated received CV because of the longer and heavier the engine a new cell. For this aircraft the eight-cylinder engine Mercedes D IV was developed with 220 hp. Metal panels clad the engine almost complete, an additional lining of the propeller hub revealed a very clean lines.

When production of the CV had to be stopped after 424 machines because of difficulties with the engine and the successor pattern C VI ( 180 hp engine) did not go to series, you created 1917 the C VII (factory designation L -18) for the same tasks. It is resorted to as many components as the CV.
