Albert Armitage

Albert Borlase Armitage ( born July 2, 1864 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, † October 31, 1943 ) was a Scottish polar explorer.

Life

The lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve ( RNR ) was deputy expedition leader of the Jackson - Harmsworth Expedition ( 1894-1897 ) under the direction of Frederick George Jackson to explore the archipelago Franz Josef Land in the Arctic. Armitage was the first of the June 17, 1896 at Cape Flora on Northbrook Island on Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen his companions after their unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole, came.

As a second commander and navigator, he then took part in the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic with Robert Falcon Scott 1901-1904.

Later Armitage worked as master on merchant ships, including the ocean liners Salsette and Karmala the British shipping company P & O.

There is a likelihood of confusion with the Australian polar explorer Bertram Armytage, who took part in the Nimrod expedition under Ernest Henry Shackleton.
