Albert Brahms

Albert Brahms ( born October 24, 1692 in Sanderahm Sande, Friesland; † August 3, 1758 in New Oberahmergroden Sande ) was a farmer, judge dike and dike construction major German pioneer.

Brahms published in 1754 and 1757, the basic features of still valid today two-volume work Foundations of dikes and hydraulic engineering.

Albert Brahms had actually been chosen by his father Harm Brahms as the successor to his father's farm in Sanderahm, but after he had married on 14 June 1716 in sands with haste Catharine mine, he took over until his death, the management of a private farm in New Oberahmergroden. A son and two daughters - - From his marriage three children were born, but died already in infancy or early childhood.

Showed early his talent for mathematics, because even during his youth on his father's farm, he worked on complex mathematical tasks and tried by studying the books of his younger brother whitefish, who was sent to the Latin school from father to Jever, his general knowledge to expand. As a self-employed farmer, he lived only a year after his marriage the devastating Christmas flood of 1717, which also devastated his lands. In 1718 he was appointed to the dike and Sielrichter in Sander parish. The unsatisfactory nature of that levees had already known him for a long time, and he never tired of his countrymen pointed repeatedly to the imminent danger in neglecting the dikes. Under the direction of jever between dike Grafs August Garlichs he was involved in the creation of the " dike Band" ( 1730). After he had exercised the office of sewage and dike judge 34 years, he put this down in 1752 after previous disputes. As a result, he was concerned with the writing of his experience and advanced technical aspects in dike construction, which were completely new for that time. For his great service to the dike safety of the " pioneer of the dikes ," as he is rightly called, was named " Princely Geometer " from back in Jeverland ruling princely house of Anhalt -Zerbst.
