Albert Margai

Sir Albert Michael Margai ( born October 10, 1910 in Gbangbatoke; † 18 December 1980) was the second Prime Minister in the history of the Republic of Sierra Leone on April 30, 1964 to March 17, 1967 He was the brother of the first Prime Minister Milton Margai. .

Under his brother Albert Margai served as Minister of Finance (1962 ) and Minister of Education, Agriculture and Nature. His successor as President of Sierra Leone has Siaka Stevens.

Alber Margai was born in Moyamba district, but grew up mostly in Freetown on. Here he finished his law studies in 1948 successfully.

Margai was a founding member of the Sierra Leone National Party in 1949. Margai was closely associated with Siaka Stevens. 1957 took over the presidency of the Margai Sierra Leone Peoples Party ( SLPP ) for only a short time later resign from that post again and set up along with Stevens, the People's National Party. During his entire political career Margai polarized very strong. He was suspected of, among others, the preference of certain tribes and corruption. Consequently Margai lost the presidential election in 1967 against his former companion and friend Siaka Stevens. Stevens took over with the All People's Congress the power. Margai did not want to accept the election defeat and donated his friend David Lansana at a coup. For four days in March 1967 Lansana took power, before Stevens with another coup won the rightful power back.

Albert Margai is the father of the politician Charles Margai.
