Albert van Ouwater

Aelbert van Ouwater, Albert van Ouwater, (* around 1415 probably in Oudewater at Gouda, † 1475 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

About Aelbert van Ouwater much historical data are not backed up. It is believed that he was a student J. van Eyck. Most of the information containing the signs Boeck by Carel van Mander, who describes him as a highly valued especially for his landscape paintings artists. In addition, he also seems to have a number of religious images painted, of which a board can be identified by van Mander's description. It is a well- painted 1450-1460 Raising of Lazarus, which is located in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, and to this day is the only largely undisputed painting by the Master.

About Ouwaters training is not known. The art of science assumes, however, that he for a stay in the southern Netherlands with the art of Petrus Christus, Rogier van der Weyden, Dieric Bouts and Jan van Eyck, ( whose pupil he may have been ) has come into contact. Based on the Berlin picture, it seems to have particularly influenced Dieric Bouts, its figural typing, its movement patterns and Garments which are very similar to the Berlin Lazarus. In addition, Ouwater proves to be an excellent colorist who even with very complex dominated the color palette in and also in the perspective was correct. He was the teacher of Geertgen tot Sint Jans.

Often the art science has tried to identify previously unknown painter with Ouwater. These include the Master of Tiburtinischen Sibylle, the master of miniatures van Eyck ( the one ascribes early landscape paintings in the Turin-Milan prayer book) and the master of sacred images. All of these identification tests found little favor in the science of art, or have long since been refuted. Not much more successful are the attempts starting from the Berlin painting, attributed Ouwater other works. Only a head fragment in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, which is similar to a head at the Berlin Lazarus panel seems it still almost are.
