Albert von Ettingshausen

Albert von Ettingshausen ( born March 30, 1850 in Vienna, † June 9, 1932 in Graz) was an Austrian physicist. Grandfather Andreas von Ettingshausen and father Constantin von Ettingshausen were also scientists.

After studying physics and doctorate, he was assistant to Ludwig Boltzmann at the Karl- Franzens- University of Graz. During his A.O. Professorship he discovered in 1886 at the Physics Institute together with Walther Nernst some thermo- galvanomagnetic effects ( Ettingshausen - Nernst effect). For promotion on this topic Nernst joined Friedrich Kohlrausch at the University of Würzburg.

In 1888 he was awarded as the successor to Jacob Pöschl a call to the chair of physics in the new building of the Physics Institute of the Technical University of Graz. Until retirement in 1920, he advanced over the chair to " chair of Physics and Electrical Engineering ." His successor in 1920 was Fritz Kohlrausch.
