Alberto MarÃa De Agostini
Alberto Maria De Agostini SDB ( born November 2, 1883 in Pollone, † December 25, 1960 in Turin ) was an Italian Salesian of Don Bosco and missionary who also became known as a passionate mountaineer, explorer, geographer, ethnographer, photographer and Filmdokumentator.
Life
His older brother Giovanni was the founder of the Institute of Geography De Agostini, Novara.
After he entered the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco and was ordained a priest in 1909, he lived from 1910 as a missionary in Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia, between Chile and Argentina. He was there the first man to climb some peaks and glaciers. Others are named after him, after he had discovered it.
In January / February 1931, he had, Egidio Feruglio and the mountain guides Croux and Bron, the first who crossed the Campo de Hielo Sur, from Lago Viedma ( Argentina ), starting to the Patagonian tunnels of the Pacific Ocean and back.
The missionary was in a deep connection with the inhabitants of Tierra de Fuego, in particular the Selknam.
He left behind 22 books and literary works in Italian, German and Spanish, a collection of several hundred photographs and a documentary about Patagonia and Tierra each de Fuego and the locals.
On his return to Italy, died on Christmas Day in 1960 in Turin.
Effect
According to him, the fjord was named, whom he had discovered in 1913 ( Agostini Fjord ) and the National Park Alberto de Agostini named in the western part of Tierra del Fuego, which is also the De Agostini Glacier is located.
