Alcantarea

Alcantarea ordorata

The plant genus Alcantarea belongs to the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ). There are about 23 species in this genus.

Description

Alcantarea species are evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plants, mostly as epiphytes or Lithophytes, ie on trees or rocks to grow. In general, there are funnel bromeliads. The hoppers ( " tanks " ) to collect water and nutrients caused by the fact that their shoot axes are compressed and the leaves in rosettes are close together and overlap. The parallel venation leaves are entire, and usually sword-shaped. These scaleless bromeliads can be very large, with 3 to 5 meters high inflorescences and funnel diameters of about 1 meter. You need many years until the formation of its inflorescence.

The large bracts of the inflorescences are long lasting in many species. Inflorescences may be branched or unbranched. The hermaphrodite flowers are triple. The petals are not fused and the ovary is upper constant. Are formed capsule fruits. The seeds have a " parachute ", similar to the dandelion.

Origin

The genus is native to tropical South America Alcantarea, their main distribution area is located in Brazil.

System

The genus name honors the Emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II de Alcântara ( 1840-1889 ).

The systematics of the subfamily Tillandsioideae, is subject to constant changes because of the demarcation problem of genera and recent phylogenetic studies, according to which the original genus Vriesea in three genera ( Vriesea Alcantarea and Werauhia ) was divided. These species were incorporated into the genus Vriesea, 1995, she introduced Jason R. Grant again in a separate genus Alcantarea and finally it was a subgenus within the genus Vriesea Alcantarea Lindl.
