Aleksandar Varbanov

Warbanow Alexander ( born May 9, 1964 in Novi Pazar, Bulgaria ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter.

Sporting career

Warbanow won the 1983 World and European Championships in Moscow middleweight up to 75 kg with 370.0 kg in single combat against Vladimir Kuznetsov, who also scored 370.0 kg, but was heavier.

In 1984, Warbanow due to the Olympics boycott of the Eastern States do not participate in the Olympics. In the middleweight Karl- Heinz Radschinsky Gold won with 340.0 kg in the total. Warbanow had occupied zuvorden second place at the European Championship, and certainly could be counted among the medal favorites.

A year later Warbanow won the European Championship in Katowice for himself and won gold in the duel with 360.0 kg before Joachim Kunz. Even the world title he won in Södertälje confidently with 370.0 kg.

In 1986, he repeated this again and won the European and the World Cup. At the World Championships in Sofia, he could easily be increased to 377.5 kg and placed so that Zdravko Stoichkows world record in a duel. In thrusting he presented with 215.0 kg on its own world record.

In Seoul 1987, he was able to increase this to 215.5 kg, and the world record in a duel to 380.0 kg. The EM 1987, he graduated as second behind his compatriot Borislav Gidikow, the World Cup a second time as a winner with 370.0 kg.

At the 1988 Olympic Games Warbanow was already after tearing 10 kg back to the first place winners. With 157.5 kg 167.5 kg Gidikows he could put up a poor. In pushing Warbanow brought 200.0 kg in the standings, thus reaching 357.5 kg and remained well below its performance in previous years, considering that he had raised in the same year the world record in duel 382.5 kg. Ultimately, this performance was enough for third place behind Gidikow with 375.0 kg and Ingo Steinhofel 360.0 kg.

1989 Warbanows was last year as an active lifter. At the World Championships he won in a duel in fourth place with 350.0 kg, and the third place in the thrusting. At the European Championships, which were again discharged together with the World Cup as a competition, that was enough for second place.
