Aleksandr Makarov (athlete)

Alexander Fyodorovich Makarov, Russian Александр Фёдорович Макаров ( born February 11, 1951 in Kasimov, Ryazan Oblast ) is a former Soviet athlete who was active in the 1970s as a javelin thrower. He is the father of the spear thrower Sergei Makarov.

Career

Alexander Makarov participated in three European Championships - 1971 in Helsinki, 1974 in Rome and 1982 in Athens part. In 1971 and 1974, he failed however already in the qualification. In 1974, he missed the required 78 m by only 8 cm. 1982, however, he succeeded with 80.74 m of the final. There he rose to 86.08 m, but remained more than three feet behind the third-placed Detlef Michel from the GDR and was sixth.

In 1977, he came in 3rd place behind Wolfgang Hanisch (1st with 88,68 m ) and Michael Wessing (2nd with 87.38 m) at the finals of the European Cup in Turin with 82.26 m.

In his only part in the Olympics in 1980 in Moscow, he was obviously in the form of his life. There he threw a fabulous series:

  • 85.84 m - 83.84 m - Ø - 84.40 m - 88.04 m - 89.64 m

Only the Latvian Dainis Kula was on this day with 91,20 m better. Makarov won the silver medal in front of the GDR athletes Wolfgang Hanisch.

In the shadow of Janis Lusis standing, Makarov won only one Soviet Championship (1974, 83.70 m).
