Aleksei Kulashko

Aleksei Kulashko (Russian Алексей Кулашко; born July 3, 1972 in Leningrad) is a New Zealand chess player.

Life

Kulashko learned the rules of chess age of four from his father. At six years old he went to the chess section of the Leningrad Pioneer Palace, where he was trained under the direction of Vyacheslav Schischmarjow. After finishing school, he earned a degree in economics at the State University of Saint Petersburg. In autumn 1995, he participated in the Chigorin Memorial tournament in St. Petersburg and reached 4.5 points from 9 games. The end of 1995, he emigrated to New Zealand for family reasons.

In January 1997, he won the national championship in North Shore, New Zealand. In the final table, he finished second behind the playing out of competition Australians Ian Rogers. The next year Kulashko won ahead of Anthony Ker in Hamilton. This time no foreign players were invited. In 2000, he finished in third place behind Auckland Ian Rogers and Dražen Sermek from Slovenia and thus became the third time New Zealand champion.
