Alexander Ecker

Johann Alexander Ecker (* July 10, 1816 in Freiburg im Breisgau, † May 20, 1887 ) was a German anatomist and anthropologist leader of his time.

Life

Alexander Ecker was the son of Johannes Matthias Alexander Ecker (1766-1829), a professor of surgery at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. Alexander Ecker graduated in 1837 from medical school in Freiburg and qualified two years later. In 1840 he became prosector in Freiburg, a year later a lecturer in Heidelberg, in 1844 to take up a full professorship in Basel. In 1850 he was again appointed to Freiburg to the chair of zoology, physiology and anatomy. The physiology and zoology he gave from 1857 as part of a re-arrangement of the chairs. 1861 Alexander Ecker was appointed Privy Councillor. He was one of the founders in 1870 of the Academic Society. Ecker became Professor Emeritus in 1883, Robert Wiedersheim became his successor. With Lorenz Oken (1779-1851) he formed a friendship.

Scientific achievements

Notoriety gained his work on embryonic development in humans and animals as well as empirical studies on the physiology and pathology. From Alexander Ecker still valid today Nomenclature of turns and lobes of the cerebral cortex originates in man, which he presented in a monograph in 1869. Some of his anatomical studies and drawings found among others input in publications of Charles Darwin. In addition to medicine and anatomy to Ecker's scientific activity also extended to the fields of Pre-and Early History, Prehistoric Anthropology and Ethnology.

Ecker has been involved in excavations in the area of the Imperial chair, where he researched the type of series graves. The versatile scientist and founder of its own anthropological collection left Freiburg an extensive estate, which formed the basis of today's Ethnographic Museum and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History and the one of the most important German skulls collections, the 1600 exhibits comprehensive Alexander Ecker collection belongs.

Appreciation

Hermann Volz created the mold for a plug - monument that was erected in July 1890 in Freiburg. The base is made from Karlsruhe sculptor Fidel Binz. In Freiburg also a street named after Ecker. Ecker 1880 was elected a member of the Leopoldina.
