Alexandre Falguière

Alexandre Falguière ( born September 7, 1831 in Toulouse, † April 20, 1900 in Paris) was a French painter and sculptor.

Life

Alexandre Falguière completed his artistic training in the studio of the sculptor François Jouffroy. He then settled as a freelance artist in Paris. During these years, he befriended even Olin Levi Warner, inter alia, with Marius and Jean Mercie. 1859 drew the Académie Française Faguière of the Prix de Rome.

With 33 years Falguière could debut with his character's winner in the cockfight at the Paris Salon in 1864. At the award ceremony while the great vitality of the naturalistic representation was praised. Four years later, his portrayal of the accursed Christian martyr Tarcisius was in the " Paris Salon 1864 " awarded a Medal of Honor.

By Jean -Baptiste Carpeaux Falguière was influenced precisely in its turn toward naturalism. From about 1870 managed Falguière his artistic breakthrough, and the possession of one of his works was in Paris as a status symbol. Also, a number of public and Others for the New Opera ( 1869) and for the Théâtre français ( 1872) followed. For his home town of Toulouse Falguière 1875 created an allegorical representation of Switzerland, a French Guards supportive, and for the city Maçon 1878 a statue Alphonse de Lamartine.

From 1873 Falguière is also devoted to painting; while the focus was on portraits and landscapes. Here Falguière left by Jean Jacques Henner inspire, who always tried to put light and shadow accents.

1878 appointed one Falguière an Officer of the Legion of Honour. In 1896 there was a scandal when he created his sculpture Danseuse and it was announced that for the dancer Cléo de Merode had been the model.

At the age of 68 years died Alexandre Falguière April 20, 1900 in Paris.
