Alfred Schmitt

Alfred Schmitt ( born November 30, 1907 in Bust; † 2 April 1973) was a French astronomer and discoverer of asteroids.

He worked in the 1930s and 1940s at the Algiers Observatory in Bouzareah, a suburb of Algiers and in the 1950s at the Royal Observatory in Uccle. In the course of his studies he discovered 1932-1953 the asteroid ( 1215) Boyer, ( 1614) Goldschmidt ( 1622) and Chacornac ( 3156 ) Ellington. From 1955 to 1958 he was director of the observatory in Quito, capital of Ecuador.

Honors

The asteroid ( 1617) Alschmitt was named by his colleagues in Algiers, Louis Boyer after him.
