Alfrocheiro Preto

Alfrocheiro Preto, often Alfrocheiro, is mainly in the DOC Dão (Portugal ) -based indigenous red grape variety. It was mentioned as early as 1791 by Coelho Seabra.

In the Dão Alfrocheiro Preto is the most important red grape. But in other parts of the country, for example in Alentejo, Ribatejo and Bairrada it is very popular because of their strong color and density as a blend partner in many wines. Varietal wines developed usually show an intense bouquet of red fruits, such as cherries and strawberries, and wild flowers. On the palate, they present themselves powerful, dense and fine fruity and spicy accents.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The leaves are medium to strong five-lobed. The leaf is hardly toothed.
  • The grape is long and dichtbeerig. The oval berries are whitish to light amber. The juice of the berries tastes sweet and has a slightly bitter aftertaste.

The variety Alfrocheiro Preto casts out late. The very productive variety is susceptible to gray mold and powdery mildew. It is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.
