Ali Sabri

Ali Sabri (Arabic علي صبري ) ( * 1920, † August 3, 1991 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian prime minister.

Biography

Sabri graduated from military training and participated in the revolution in 1952 the group of " free officers " against King Faruq an active role. Nevertheless, he was not one of the twelve members consisting of the ranks of the Free Officers Revolution Command Council, the exile in July 1952, took power after the fall of King Farouk and his gang.

As a close ally of Gamal Abdel Nasser, he was appointed in 1962 by Nasser to succeed him as Prime Minister and held that post until 1965. Successor as Prime Minister was vice president Zakaria Mohieddin, Sabri was appointed Vice President of Egypt ( to 1968 ) and Secretary General of the Arab Socialist Union, the only legal party under Nasser appointed.

In October 1970, he was the successor to Nasser as president, appointed vice-president again under Anwar Sadat. However, he was deposed in May 1971 by this office because the conspiracy he was accused of a coup and overthrow of Sadat. In the subsequent trial, he was initially sentenced to death in December 1971. However, later the mitigation of the penalty to life imprisonment by Sadat, who gave him finally in 1981, a few time before his assassination, uttered the pardon.
