Alois Walde

Alois Walde ( born November 30, 1869 in Innsbruck, † October 3, 1924 in Königsberg ) was an Austrian Indo-Europeanist.

Life

Alois Walde studied classical philology and comparative linguistics at the University of Innsbruck (mainly in Frederick pride ), where in 1894 he sub auspiciis imperatoris Dr. phil. received his doctorate. In 1895 he was hired as a civil servant at the University Library. A year later he received his habilitation ( first at the University of Innsbruck) for the subject of linguistics. As part of his part-time teaching in 1904, he received the title of " associate professor " and in 1907 was appointed personal associate professor.

1909 changed the forest as a full professor in his field at the University of Giessen. In 1912 he returned to succeed his teacher's pride at the University of Innsbruck, where he was Dean of the Faculty in 1914 and 1916 Rector of the University. The Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna in 1917 he was elected a corresponding member.

1922 changed the forest to the University of Königsberg. In the same year he took on in 1924 to a professorship at the University of Breslau, but he could not follow. He died on October 3, 1924 at the age of 54 years.

Walde made ​​contributions to the laryngeal and especially to study the word stock of the Indo-European languages ​​. His multi-volume etymological dictionaries were repeatedly reissued and expanded and are still in use today.
