The largest industry of the town is tourism, although Altafulla so far remained untouched by mass tourism. The beach was repeatedly heaped up and widened in recent years and is considered one of the cleanest in the whole of Spain.

The medieval town center ( Vila Closa ) is enclosed by a wall partially preserved. In the village is a large, partly inhabited castle. Excavations with remains of buildings of the Roman villa rustica Els Munts are housed mainly in the Archaeological Museum of Tarragona. The village center is a listed building.
