Altengamme is a borough of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. He is one of the Four Lands in the district of Bergedorf.

Geography

Altengamme is the easternmost district of the Hanseatic city and is located on the north bank of the Elbe.

To him also belongs the nature reserve Borghorster Elblandschaft, which consists of the three regions Altengammer Elbe, Borghorster dunes and caused by a dike breach large Borghorster Brack.

History

Altengamme was first mentioned in documents in 1188. The name means Old Earth and is derived from the Indo-European word Gham or Ghama for earth from. 1420 acquired Hamburg and Lübeck, the common rule over the village. Altengamme is still dominated by agriculture, it is mainly grown flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Fire department

One of the oldest volunteer fire departments Hamburg - founded in 1878 - has its base in Altengamme.

Traffic

Through the north Altengammes the motorway leads 25 The next two connection points are outside Altengammes in Curslack and in Geesthacht. Culture and sights

• The Evangelical Lutheran St. Nicolai church dates back in its origins to the 13th century. The present appearance dates from the 17th century. The bell " Celsa " from 1487 originally hung in the Hamburger Mary's Cathedral and after its demolition in 1804 it was brought here.
