Amalia of Oldenburg

Amalie Marie Friederike, Duchess of Oldenburg ( born December 21, 1818 in Oldenburg, † May 20 1875 in Bamberg) was by marriage Princess of Bavaria and Queen of Greece.

Life

Amalie was the daughter of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August of Oldenburg and his first wife, Princess Adelheid of Anhalt- Bernburg - Schaumburg- Hoym. Amalie married on 22 November 1836 in Oldenburg King Otto I of Greece, the son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe- Hildburghausen. The marriage remained childless. Queen Amalie initiated the planning and application of the castle garden in Athens ( since 1974 National Garden ), but her main interest focused on agriculture, where they campaigned for a limitation on the power of Turkish landowners. It supported the increase in agricultural production, among other things by promoting the use of modern farming methods. Allegedly, she also designed the uniform of Evzonen.

Political resistance forced Amalie and her husband in 1862 to leave Greece and to go into exile in the home of Otto.

Amalie died in 1875 at the age of 56 years in Bamberg. As an heir of her considerable fortune she used her sister Friederike of Washington. Amalie was buried in the crypt of the Theatinerkirche in Munich.

Commemoration

During his lifetime, was understood as emancipatory act their offensive impact on the political and social life in Greece from women. In areas that still belonged to the Ottoman Empire, provoked by Greeks imitation of the permissive style of clothing Amalie.

In Greece she had the nickname " beautiful Amalie " and to this day, keeps the myth, Amalie was the most beautiful queen of the country. A main road in the center of Athens, the Leofóros Basilísis Amalías ( German: Queen Amalie Avenue ) is also named after her. In the Amalie Oldenburg bridge over the Hunte and the enclosing them Amalienstraße bear her name.
