Amat Escalante

Amat Escalante (born 28 February 1979 in Barcelona, Spain) is a Mexican film director, producer and screenwriter. In 2013 he received the award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Heli.

Life

Amat Escalante was born in Barcelona, ​​but spent most of his childhood and youth in the Mexican city of Guanajuato. Later he returned to Barcelona to study film editing and sound at the Centro de Estudios de Catalunya Cinematográficos.

His first short film Amarrados 2002 was awarded at several festivals. Subsequently, he was involved as an assistant director Carlos Reygadas on the production of the highly acclaimed film Battle in Heaven.

In 2005 he laid before finally Sangre with his first feature film. Its debut this at the film festival of Cannes in the Un Certain Regard.

In the following years he turned with Los Bastardos and heli two more movies. For the latter he received in 2013 an invitation to the competition of the 66th Cannes Film Festival. His directing skills was honored by the international jury awarded the Prix de la mise en scène.
