Amirante Islands

The Amiranten (French Les Amirantes, once called Almir antenna or Joan Martin's Islands) are an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off East Africa. You now belong to the Outer Islands of the Seychelles.

The archipelago was discovered by the Portuguese Vasco da Gama during his second expedition in 1502 and were " Ilhas do Almirante " ( German: Admiralty Islands ) named. It is possible that there had already been from the islands prior knowledge of Arab and Indian traders.

As of 1814, the islands were occupied by the British, and were beginning to Mauritius, since the spin-off of the Seychelles in 1909 as a separate colony to those. They are between 5 and 6 ° south latitude and consist of three atolls and several individual islands or island groups. These together comprise a land area of 10 km ². The total estimated population of 100 people distributed mainly to the five largest islands in the Amiranten.

In the table below a shoal and two reefs in the area of the island chain are listed for completeness. The various terminal types are indicated by different background colors.
