Description

Vegetative characteristics

Amitostigma simplex is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height 7-26 inches and terrestrial growing. It constitutes almost spherical elongate tubers with a length of 10 to 15 millimeters and a diameter of 5 to 10 millimeters. The slender, smooth stem near its base has two tubular sheaths and above a single, undergraduate standing up at half height fallen leaf stalks. The simple leaf blade is at a length of 2 to 8 cm and a width of 3-8 mm lanceolate with a pointed upper end.

Generative features

The flowering period extends into China from June to August. The standing on a non- exfoliated or rarely provided with a laublattähnlichen bract inflorescence stem inflorescence contains at a 1-3.5 cm long inflorescence axis in loose to dense intervals almost three to more than ten flowers. The at a length of 3 to 6 mm, lanceolate -shaped with a pointed upper end cover is usually shorter than the ovary.

The pedicel and ovary is 6-9 mm long. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and threefold. The bloom is bright pink to pale purple, polka dots purple until the middle of the lip. The upper, upright cup sheet is elongated ovoid with a length of 2.5 to 3.3 millimeters and a width of about 2.0 mm, concave, blunt upper end. The two lateral spread to recurved sepals are ovate and slightly slanted with a length of 3 to 4 millimeters and a width of about 1.8 millimeters. The petals are loosely connected to the lateral sepals, forming a cap. The petals are broad ovoid with blunt upper end at a length of 2.8 to 3.5- mm and a width of about 2 mm. The up to their mid- lobed lip is rhombic - obovate with a blunt upper end at a length of 4.5 to 6, rarely up to 8 millimeters and a width of 3.5 to 4 millimeters in outline. The two lateral flaps are elongated obovate, with a length of 2 to 3.5 mm and at a width of 1.6 to 2 millimeters. The middle lobe is at a length of 2.5 to 4 millimeters and a width of about 2 mm oblong- obovate with pointed base and blunt - clipped or rarely ausgerandetem to slightly notched, two small flap -forming upper end. The more or less pointing downwards, slightly inwardly curved spur is cylindrical with a length of 3.5 to 6 mm and widens toward the top, blunt end. The stigma lobes are club-shaped.

Occurrence and risk

The natural range of Amitostigma tetralobum is located in southern China. The species grows on rocky soils in forests and grassy slopes in the southwestern Sichuan and the southwestern and western Yunnan at altitudes 1500-2700 meters.

Amitostigma tetralobum applies according to the IUCN Red List as "endangered " = "at risk". Amitostigma tetralobum is listed by CITES Appendix II in order to avoid trade worldwide.
