Anders Österling

Johan Anders Osterling ( born April 13, 1884 in Helsingborg, † December 13, 1981 in Stockholm) was a Swedish poet, writer and journalist.

Life

Anders Osterling put 1904 in Lund, Abitur and studied also in Lund. From 1909 to 1919 he was Biobliothekar at the Lund University Library since 1919, he was a professional journalist and lived in Stockholm. Also in 1919 he was elected a member of the Swedish Academy, the Permanent Secretary, he was from 1941 to 1964. In this capacity, he took great influence on the choice of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Importance

In his first collection of poems Anders Osterling was strongly influenced by German and French influences. Soon, however, he found his own style: Description of nature and people, often based on motifs from his home Skåne, and the change of seasons as an image of transience. Österling resembled in his colleague Erik Axel Karlfeldt that he also made ​​his native landscape to the starting point of his poetry. In contrast to Karlfeldt Österling used but a more sober, restrained style. His poetry is often about beauty, affirmation of life against the background darker and experiences of human values. His most famous poem Ales stones from the collection of poems clays från havet (1933 ) sensitively and poetically describes the famous stone ship Ales stones of Kåseberga in Ystad.
