André Paul Cailleux ( born December 24, 1907 in Paris as André de Cayeux de Senarpont, † December 27, 1986 in Saint- Maur- des-Fosses ) was a French geologist and geographer. He later published under the pseudonym Cailleux initially but also under its original name Cayeux.

He acquired in Paris a broad training as a scientist. In 1931 he received his degree in physics, 1932 in Science and Literature in 1933 and 1936 his Agrégation in natural sciences. In 1942 he received his doctorate in Paris with a thesis on periglacial phenomena in the European Quaternary. He taught at high schools in Warsaw, Brest and at the Lycée Marcelin Berthelot in Saint- Maur - des -Fosses before he became head of research in physical geography at the Faculté des lettres de Paris. After that he was Maître de conférences at the Laboratory of the Ecole Pratique des geomorphology Hautes Etudes in Paris, was from 1958 Professor of Geology ( Sedimentology ) at the Sorbonne and at the University of Laval in Quebec, Canada. He also taught in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada and Rio de Janeiro.

Cailleux was a specialist in Glazialmorphologie and geomorphology, but dealt with many areas ( for example, with biogeography ) and wrote several popular science books, especially within the Que sais - je? Series. He was the founder of the ACDS ( Association pour la création et la diffusion Scientifique ), which brought out the magazine DIRE.

He did field research among other things, in the Antarctic ( 1960/61, he was a French representative to the U.S. Antarctic expeditions ), in Greenland, Canada, in Iceland, in the Sahara, in Brazil and Guyana. André Cailleux spoke seven languages ( along with French, English, German, Russian, Polish, Spanish and Italian). He was a member of the Committee for the " International Quartärkarte of Europe " and president of the " International Commission on periglacial morphology ".

Cailleux was with Jean Tricart founder of the Revue de dynamique geomorphology and co-editor of the Journal of geomorphology, Cahiers Geologiques, and 1963-1971 of the Annales de Géographie.

In 1972 he received the Albrecht Penck Medal. He was a member of the Leopoldina ( since 1973), the Bavarian and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. In 1961 he was made an honorary Doctor of Polish University of Łódź. The Quartärgesellschaft of Québéc ( Association pour l' étude du Québécoise Quaternaire ) lends his honor the " Cailleux Medal". A 50 km diameter crater on Earth's Moon is named after him (60 ° 48 '0 "S, 153 ° 18' 0" E ).
