André Hunebelle

André Hunebelle ( born September 1, 1896 in Meudon, † November 27, 1985 in Nice ) was a French film director.

Life

Hunebelle initially studied mathematics at the École Polytechnique in Palaiseau. His studies were interrupted by the First World War, had been drafted in the Hunebelle temporarily as a soldier.

Hunebelle then was active 1926-1935 as a glassblower. In 1927 he had his first solo exhibition. He created glass art, especially vases and glasses, which corresponded to the fashion of that time and were very successful with the public; his creative artistic movement of the Art Deco is attributable.

In the early 1940s Hunebelle then turned to the film. He founded his own film production company Production Artistique Cinématographie and initially worked exclusively as a film producer. He produced, among other films Feu Sacré (1941/1942) with Viviane Romance, L' Inevitable Monsieur Dubois (1943 ), Florence est folle (1944 ), Leçon de conduite (1946) and Carrefour du crime (1947). From 1948 onwards, Hunebelle also worked as a film director.

Hunebelle worked in almost all film genres as a director. He turned film dramas, melodramas, comedies, adventure films and costume dramas. He realized numerous light comedies in American style, he adapted to the taste of the French cinema audience sent. Frequently he worked there with the actors of the French boulevard theater, among other things, Louis de Funès, together. In 1953 he turned the successful literary adaptation The Adventures of the Three Musketeers, among others, Georges Marchal, Bourvil and Gino Cervi in the lead roles.

He then specialized mainly on adventure films with Jean Marais; with Marais he turned among other costume dramas Knights of the Night (1959 ), Le capitain (1960), Under the Sign of the Lily (1961) and The Count with the iron hand (1962). From the mid- 1960s, he had great success with the now achieved cult status Fantômas series, which he directed in the style of modern agents thriller and are consciously used slapstick; During this period he and Marais de Funès audience appeal as a opponent duo. Similar style means the Fantomas series he sat in his modernization of the Count of Monte Cristo - a substance with The Avengers out of the coffin (1968).

The screenplays for his films written mainly Jean Halain, a close associate Hunebelles. In February 1978, Hunebelles last film premiere in France. It was a remake of his first film as a director in 1948, Métier de fous.
