Andrea Gabrieli

Andrea Gabrieli (* 1532/1533 in Venice, † August 30, 1585 ) was an Italian organist and composer.

Life

Gabrieli probably comes from the municipality of San Geremia in the district of Cannaregio in Venice. He may have worked for some time in Verona at the local Kapellmeister Vincenzo Ruffo. 1555 and 1557 he is mentioned as organist at his home church, where he unsuccessfully applied for in 1557, first as assistant organist at San Marco. The post received Claudio Merulo.

In 1562 he traveled to Germany, where he visited Frankfurt am Main and Munich, where he met Orlando di Lasso and became friendly with him, which led to a fruitful exchange between the two musicians. Shortly thereafter, Gabrieli returned to Venice, where his " Cantiones Sacrae " appeared in print in 1565, a collection of 37 spiritual songs to five votes. The following year, 1566, he was appointed the first organist at the cathedral of San Marco in Venice, one of the most recognized items for musicians in Italy.

The work in the unique acoustics of St. Mark's Basilica enabled him to develop his original style of composition was drawn from the current style of multiple choirs and concert music-making and should shape the beginnings of the Baroque. He was responsible for the composition of festive music on various occasions, he wrote the music for the celebration of the victory over the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto (1571 ), as well as festive music for the visits of various Japanese prince in Venice (1585 ).

Among his pupils were next to his famous nephew Giovanni Gabrieli, the composer and music theorist Lodovico Zacconi, Hans Leo Hassler, who should bear his concertante style to Germany and numerous other composers including Gregor Aichinger and Rogier Michael.

His numerous works, mostly motets, masses, psalms, etc., as well as six volumes of music for keyboard instrument, appeared at Venice and Nuremberg in pressure.

He is next to his nephew Giovanni Gabrieli as the most important composer of the Venetian Tonschule and one of the most influential of the Renaissance at all. He helped the major and minor harmonies breakthrough and his contemporaries in the precision of its instrumental requirements far ahead.
