Andreas Essenius

Andreas Essenius (also: Andreas van Essen; * February 1618 in Zaltbommel, † May 18, 1677 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of Herman van Essen and his wife Christina van den Broek had initially attended the Latin school of his native city. He continued his education at the Gymnasium in Utrecht continued, and was raised as to this university, he graduated from studies in philosophy and theology. After he was accepted in 1639 as a theological candidate of the ministry, he earned on June 7, 1640 the academic degree of Master of Philosophy. He went on December 13, 1640 as a preacher by Neerlangbroek his doctorate at February 19, 1645 as a doctor of theology.

1651, he became pastor in Utrecht and on February 8, 1653 professor of theology at the University of Utrecht, which office he took tractatione with the speech De Verbi Divini. As a theological colleagues of Gisbert Voetius he was a supporter of the Reformation qualifier. He went polemical action against his Dutch colleague Johannes Cocceius, Abraham Heydanus (1597-1678) and Frans Burman ( 1628-1679 ). He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was 1656/58 and 1674/75 Rector of the Alma Mater.
