Andreas Maurer (politician)

Andreas Maurer ( born September 7, 1919 in Trautmann an der Leitha, † October 25, 2010 ) was an Austrian politician (ÖVP ). He was from 1966 to 1981 Governor of Lower Austria.

Youth and Education

Andreas Maurer, born as the second of three children, grew up on his parents' farm. From 1925 to 1933 he attended the elementary school in Trautmann village, then the Agricultural College in Bruck an der Leitha.

From 1940 to 1945 he was a soldier of the Wehrmacht and fell in Italy in British captivity, from which he was discharged in 1945.

Political career

From 1946, Maurer was politically active as a farmer representative. The farmer Maurer was from 1951 to 1956 the municipal council of Trautmann village. From 1959 to 1964 he served as Member of the Lower Austrian provincial parliament and from 1964 to 1966 as Regional Minister and President of the Austrian Farmers' Federation. Furthermore, Maurer was 1970-1989 chairman of the Lower Austrian Farmers' Federation.

From November 24th 1966 to January 22, 1981 Andreas Maurer exercised the office of Governor of Lower Austria. During his tenure, a modernization process in several areas ( Niederösterreichisches compulsory education law in 1972, Regional Planning Act, Conservation Act of 1976, a new state constitution ), the expansion of the road network has been accelerated, reformed the municipal structure and initiated. Apart from a few small changes - - During his tenure, the large local government reform in 1970, with the number of municipalities in Lower Austria from 1281 was reduced to the present 573.

Private

Maurer was always the music connected. So he joined in 1932, the band music at in his hometown and later became honorary president of the Lower Austrian Blasmusikverbandes.
